The New York state Board of Elections in Albany received mail containing a suspicious substance, the board said in a release Tuesday evening, in what appears to be part of a pattern of potentially threatening mail being sent to elections offices in other states.
“The State Board immediately contacted law enforcement and temporarily evacuated the area. Law enforcement’s investigation into the incident is ongoing,” the board said.
Other packages were sent to elections officials in Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri and Rhode Island.
It’s the second time in the past year that suspicious packages were mailed to election officials in multiple state offices.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the package contained a white powdery substance and that no one was injured as a result.
“We will not tolerate threats to the dedicated officials who administer our elections,” Hochul said in the post.
